Check 21 a Marketing Opportunity!

October 28th for most banks was only a beginning, with much work remaining to be done in order to take full operational advantage of imaging. However, our research shows that unless a bank has thought through its Remote Capture Strategy for Business Customers, it could be missing business opportunities and leaving its customers exposed to capture by other banks.

Bankers who see the opportunities are interested in remote capture of check images at business locations because:

    • Remote capture provides customers with the convenience of not having to come to the branch, earlier funds availability, and the ability to submit
      deposits throughout the day;
    • Remote capture can be a new source of fee income and prevent or slow the erosion of checking fees expected as imaging drives costs down;
    • Remote capture is something new to talk to customers and prospects about, and can be helpful in acquiring new relationships - even giving it
      away and considering it a marketing expense;
    • Remote capture can extend the footprint of the branch, attracting customers who would otherwise find the branch inconvenient to use - even giving
      it away and considering the expense an alternative to investing in more bricks and mortar;
    • Remote capture provides a way to get more of a company's business when the bank has the headquarters' accounts, but lacks the branch
      network needed to serve all the company's locations;
    • Remote capture provides a way for customers with multiple locations to deposit a single account even though the local branches (often acquired
      through acquisition) do not share the same DDA system; and
    • Remote capture can be an alternative to or a new form of wholesale lockbox, where business customers get their customers' communications
      earlier and checks are collected as quickly as in a traditional lockbox.

Banks are starting to act on these Check 21 enabled opportunities and suppliers of hardware and software are beginning to offer new products to enable cost effective remote capture to customers of all sizes.
